Lighting Electrical Colchester | Essex Electricians
- Rangoon Close, Colchester, Essex, England, CO2 9RH
I started as an electrical apprentice at 16, straight from school, training with N.G. Bailey. By 20 I was fully qualified, and the years that followed took me across domestic, commercial and industrial work — Teesside homes, schools, hospitals, power stations, even offshore platforms. Then, in 2005, my brother Carl and I auditioned for The X Factor as Journey South. We finished third, signed to Simon Cowell’s label, and had a number-one album. Fifteen years as a touring musician followed. Eventually I came back to Teesside and back to electrical work, updated my qualifications, and built Alps Electrical with my wife Isabella, who spent 15 years as a financial advisor before bringing that same attention to detail into running the business alongside me.
We’re based at 10 Levington Mews, Thirsk Road, Kirklevington (TS15 9WF), and work within a 20-mile radius covering Yarm, Eaglescliffe, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and the wider Teesside and North East area. Isabella usually handles your first call, and I’ll be the one who comes out to survey the job — there’s no call centre and no salesperson passing you between departments.
We hold current 18th Edition (BS7671) qualifications and Part P certification, and we’re NAPIT registered, meaning we self-certify our own installations. We’re also TrustMark endorsed and RECC registered for solar and battery work, and one of a small number of Tesla Certified Installers in the North East.
From adding a socket to a full rewire, we handle domestic electrical work across Kirklevington and North Yorkshire — consumer unit upgrades, lighting, EICR testing, fault finding, electric shower installations and new build wiring. Every job comes with the proper Electrical Installation Certificate, and Building Control Notification where it’s needed, so nothing holds up a sale down the line.
We’re MCS certified for solar PV and battery storage, and solar installations currently qualify for 0% VAT. Most of our domestic jobs now include battery storage — Tesla Powerwall 3 is a common choice, and we’re seeing a lot of customers who already have an older solar array retrofit batteries onto it rather than starting from scratch. On the commercial side, our team fitted a 19kW array at Saltburn Golf Club, one of a growing number of larger installations we’ve taken on alongside our residential work. Every solar survey is free, and I’ll tell you honestly if solar isn’t a good fit for your roof rather than push a sale that doesn’t make sense.
We fit Tesla, Zappi, Andersen and EO chargers for homes, businesses and commercial car parks, and we’re OZEV-approved, so we can help you access the available government grant where a property qualifies. Where you’ve already got solar panels, we set the charger up to prioritise your own generation first.
For businesses across North Yorkshire and Teesside, we cover everything from reactive maintenance and LED lighting upgrades to full rewiring, emergency lighting and workplace EV charging, along with electrical testing and compliance work.
We’ve built up hundreds of five-star reviews on Checkatrade, and in 2024 Checkatrade named us their national Sustainability Champion — an award we still hold — alongside a commendation for Solar PV Installer of the Year at the Energy Efficiency Awards. It’s not just Isabella and me on site: Leo and Brad are regularly out on jobs with us, and customers often mention them by name in reviews, which says more about the standard of work than anything we could write here ourselves.
