I’m Steve Blackwood, and I’ve been servicing boilers and fitting heating systems in Durham and the North East for over 20 years. One of my longest-standing customers has had me out to service their boiler every year for more than a decade — that kind of relationship is really what this business is built on. We’re based at Aykley Vale Chambers on Durham Road, Aykley Heads, and cover Durham, Hartlepool and the wider North East.
Blackwood Heating isn’t family-run in name only. My daughter Lucy works alongside me and regularly gets mentioned by name in reviews for being just as thorough and hard-working as the rest of the team, and Ashley’s been with us for years too, out on jobs and known to customers by name rather than as “an engineer.” When someone’s had their entire house re-piped for a new heating system, I want them dealing with people they actually know by the end of it, not a rotating cast of subcontractors.
Gas Safe registered installation, servicing and repairs are still the core of what we do day to day — new boiler installs, replacements, emergency repairs, and annual servicing. A lot of our boiler customers have been with us for years precisely because we’re the same person turning up each time, not a different engineer sent out by a call centre.
We’re MCS certified for air source heat pump installation across Durham and the North East, and this has become a growing part of the business — recent jobs have included fitting a 12kW Samsung heat pump alongside 18 radiators in a single week, supported through the survey, EPC and grant application process from start to finish.
We’re also MCS certified for ground source heat pump installation, harnessing underground thermal energy for households looking for a highly efficient, long-term heating solution.
We don’t just install and disappear — I make a point of following up after the summer shutdown period to make sure a system’s running properly before winter, which isn’t something every installer bothers with once the invoice is paid.
We install solar thermal systems for hot water and solar PV for electricity generation across Durham, giving customers a way to cut running costs alongside their heating work, often as part of a wider renewable energy upgrade rather than a standalone job.
We also fit swimming pool heat pumps, extending the usable season for a home pool while keeping running costs well below traditional heating methods.
Away from residential work, we look after several commercial sites on an ongoing basis, including one facilities client with multiple office blocks, plant areas and labs who calls on us for gas installations, repairs and servicing across the whole site — the kind of long-term commercial relationship that tends to follow from being reliable on the small jobs first.
We work throughout Durham, Hartlepool and the wider North East of England, for both residential and commercial customers.
If you need a Gas Safe registered heating engineer in Durham — whether that’s a boiler service, a heat pump installation, or a renewable energy upgrade — get in touch for honest, practical advice and a free quote. I’ll tell you straight if something isn’t the right fit for your property rather than push a sale that doesn’t make sense.
