About Us

Lighting Electrical: NAPIT Registered Electricians in Colchester, CO2

We’re Lighting Electrical, and we’re a NAPIT registered electrical contractor based right here in Colchester, on the city’s Victorian terraces, post-war estates and new builds. We’ve been doing this in Colchester for ten years, working across repairs, testing, rewires and lighting for homes, landlords and businesses throughout the CO2 area and beyond.

About Us

We’re based in Old Heath, in the south of the city, and a normal week for us takes in the town centre and the Dutch Quarter, New Town and the Garrison streets, Lexden and Prettygate on the west side, and Greenstead, Highwoods and Mile End to the north and east. We know Colchester’s housing stock inside out, from the Victorian terraces off Military Road to the 1950s and 60s council builds in Shrub End, Monkwick and Greenstead, and we bring that local knowledge to every job.

We are NAPIT registered under member number 80815, which you can check on NAPIT’s own member search rather than taking our word for it.

Our Services

We cover EICRs, inspecting and reporting on the condition of a property’s fixed electrics; fuse board replacement, replacing the consumer unit, testing circuits and issuing certification; house rewiring, whether that’s a full or partial rewire, tested and certified on completion; electrical fault finding and repair, tracing the problem, finding the cause and agreeing the right fix; lighting installation, covering indoor, outdoor, garden and smart lighting; and EV charger installation, fitting a dedicated chargepoint and the circuit it needs.

Why Choose Us

You get the fault explained in plain English, a price agreed before we start, the certificate the work calls for at the end, and honest hours. We work Monday to Friday, nine to five, and we publish those hours because we keep to them. We don’t advertise a 24 hour service, because we’d rather be straightforward about when we’re actually available than promise something we can’t consistently deliver. If something feels unsafe outside those hours, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit, and if the whole street’s dark, call 105 free of charge to reach UK Power Networks. Message us and we’ll give you the first slot we have.

Quotes are always free, and most of our work carries a published price you can check before you get in touch. Where a job’s charged by the hour, we say so up front, and where materials are billed separately, we tell you that before anything’s booked.

Common Colchester Electrical Questions

If you’re letting a property near the university, you’ll need an EICR. In England, the fixed wiring of a rented home normally has to be inspected and tested at least every five years, or sooner if the previous report says so, and your tenant gets a copy. Just over one in five Colchester households rented privately at the 2021 census, and with more than 10,000 students out at Wivenhoe Park, landlord testing makes up a large part of our week.

If your house is a 1950s or 60s Colchester council build, that doesn’t automatically mean it needs a rewire. Age on its own isn’t a fault — what we actually look at is the consumer unit, the earthing and bonding, and how much the original circuits have been extended over the years. Plenty of Shrub End, Monkwick and Greenstead houses need a board change and some remedial work rather than a full rewire, and a report tells you which of the two you’re looking at.

We can also rewire a Victorian terrace without wrecking the plaster, which comes up constantly across New Town and the streets off Military Road. We plan the routes before we cut, use the voids and chases that already exist, and tell you honestly where a new chase has to be made. We won’t pretend a rewire is dust free, but we’ll tell you exactly where the mess is going to be.

Colchester keeps building, and we take on new-build work as readily as a house from the 1880s. Colchester and Tendring adopted the plan for the Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community in 2025, with an application since submitted for 7,750 homes between Colchester, Ardleigh, Wivenhoe and Elmstead Market, and first homes expected from 2027. New wiring still means extra sockets, outside lighting, EV charging and alterations, and we’re ready for that work as it comes.

What Our Customers Say

We currently hold a 4.9 rating from 47 reviews. One customer told us they had an EV charger installed by Valand and couldn’t be more pleased, saying the whole process from initial quote to final inspection was smooth and stress-free, that he was knowledgeable and friendly, made sure the charger was positioned exactly where they wanted it, and provided all the necessary certificates and warranty. Another customer said we were with them in good time and brilliant at finding the fault and getting their power back on, and said they’d highly recommend us. A further customer simply thanked us for great work.

Areas We Cover

We’re based in Colchester and also work across Witham, Maldon, Wivenhoe, Tiptree, Kelvedon, West Mersea, Stanway, Brightlingsea, Coggeshall and Marks Tey. Colchester is home, it’s where we’re based, and it’s where most of our week is spent, but we do work further out across the towns around it too.

Get in Touch

Tell us the property, the postcode and what’s actually happening, and send a photo of the consumer unit if a circuit keeps tripping. That’s usually enough for us to tell you whether it’s a fixed price job, an hourly one, or something we need to see first.
