About Us

Sheffield Loft Conversions: South Yorkshire’s Longest-Established Loft Conversion Specialist Since 1986

Founded in 1986 and still run as a genuine family business, Sheffield Loft Conversions has completed over 300 loft conversions across South Yorkshire in nearly four decades of trading — and has done so while holding onto a policy that most growing building companies would have abandoned long ago: taking on just one project at a time. Based at the Raven Business Centre in Sheffield, the company is registered with Cutlers’ Hall, a genuinely rare and historic Sheffield credential, and is a proud member and award winner of the Federation of Master Builders.

Whether it’s a simple roof light conversion, a full dormer extension, or a bespoke master suite carved out of an under-used loft space, Sheffield Loft Conversions offers homeowners across South Yorkshire nearly 40 years of specialist experience and a genuinely personal, closely managed approach to every build.

About Sheffield Loft Conversions — Meet Simon and the Team

Sheffield Loft Conversions is a family-run company that only went limited as recently as 2022, after more than 34 years of trading — making it, by its own account, Sheffield’s only registered loft conversion company with Cutlers’ Hall, and a proud member and award winner of the Federation of Master Builders. The small, close-knit team — Simon, Josh, Will, and Dave, supported by office administrator Annette — bring genuine, specialist experience to every conversion, having completed over 300 projects across more than 30 years in the trade.

Company director Simon has personally received significant recognition within the building industry, including visits to Downing Street and recognition as one of Britain’s Top Tradesmen, alongside involvement in charitable fundraising events including Breast Cancer awareness campaigns and support for Crohn’s and Colitis research. That personal track record of recognition and integrity is something the company is keen for customers to know about directly, with the same familiar staff kept on site throughout a project rather than a rotating, unfamiliar team.

Registered with Cutlers’ Hall — A Genuinely Rare Sheffield Credential

One of the more distinctive markers of Sheffield Loft Conversions’ standing in the local trade is its registration with Cutlers’ Hall, the historic seat of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire — one of Sheffield’s oldest and most respected civic institutions. Being the only loft conversion company in the city registered with Cutlers’ Hall is a genuinely unusual credential, reflecting a level of established local standing that newer or less formally recognised competitors simply can’t claim.

One Project at a Time

While many building companies grow by running several jobs simultaneously, Sheffield Loft Conversions has deliberately stuck to a “one at a time” policy throughout its history. Focusing entirely on a single project until it’s finished means the same experienced team is fully present on every job, communication stays consistent, and a customer’s home isn’t competing for attention with several other sites at once — a genuinely different approach to project management than most growing construction businesses take.

Services

Loft Conversion Types

Sheffield Loft Conversions designs and builds a full range of loft conversion styles, tailored to each property’s roof structure and the homeowner’s own vision for the finished space — whether that’s a new master suite, a teenage bedroom, a home office, or a guest suite.

Dormer Windows

Dormer window installations are a core part of the company’s work, adding valuable headroom and natural light to a loft conversion, particularly in properties where the existing roofline limits usable space.

Velux Window Fitting

For conversions where a full dormer isn’t needed or appropriate, Sheffield Loft Conversions also fits Velux roof windows, bringing natural light into the new space while working within the existing roof structure.

Planning, Building Regulations, and the Party Wall Act

Sheffield Loft Conversions guides customers through the full regulatory side of a loft conversion project, including building regulations, planning permission requirements, and the Party Wall Act where a project affects a shared wall with a neighbouring property — an area that catches many homeowners out if not handled properly from the outset.

Honest Pricing on Extra Works

A detail that speaks clearly to the company’s approach to customer trust: when clients decide to add extra work once a project is already under way, as often happens once the “big stuff” is being undertaken, Sheffield Loft Conversions completes any additional work at cost only, with no extra profit margin added — a direct contrast to the practice some builders use of treating mid-project changes as an opportunity to increase their profit.

Sustainability

Every loft conversion is designed from the earliest planning stages with environmental sustainability in mind, using FSC-certified sustainable timber sourced from responsibly managed forests, efficiency-rated CFC-free insulation to help reduce a home’s energy bills, and clean air vehicles across the company’s transport fleet.

What Customers Say

Sheffield Loft Conversions’ reviews consistently praise Simon and the team’s attention to detail, cleanliness, and commitment to minimising disruption. One customer in Meadowhead, who needed more than a single bedroom created in their loft, described the finished result as impeccable, praising a friendly, punctual, and extremely clean and tidy team who did their absolute best to minimise disruption to family life. A customer in Fulwood praised a genuinely high-end finish and respectful, clean workmanship, describing the team as the best in the business. A further customer in Norton described their loft conversion being completed on time, on budget, and to a higher standard than they believed possible, calling it a different class of building work entirely.
